Loftus Lasso Walk

Starting Point: Loftus Oval

This walk starts at the Loftus Oval, Sutherland Shire, in the Royal National Park and takes around 45 minutes (around an hour with young kids) and starts at Loftus Oval car park.

You get here via the Princes Highway, just past Sutherland, and park at Loftus Oval.

Please note there are restrictions on parking here when the Oval is in use, so avoid weekend mornings or check with the council for the latest information on this.

What’s Good About The Loftus Lasso Walk?

  • It’s a fairly easy walk
  • The path twists and turns quite a bit, so it’s a bit more entertaining for young children
  • Plenty of varied flora and fauna to appreciate and take in the fresh air
  • If you are lucky you might spot some of the local residents: we saw a wallaby (on a very quiet day), Rosellas & Kookaburras. We also spotted an Echidna on an extended version of this walk.

Walking Directions

The walk starts out at Loftus Oval and after a short walk you meet the tram tracks, over the other side of the tracks is the Loftus loop. Walk down the hill (on the Loftus loop) and immediately turn right into the forest (not down the tram track).

The path twists and turns and you’ll soon see a bike jump (a series of small hills). Keep walking until you meet a crossing where you can go straight on or left, keep going straight. Follow the path and it will start to slope down towards the first stream crossing. 

The path continues down until you meet another crossing, here you turn left crossing over the second stream and up the slope. The path continues up and there is an option to turn left or to go straight, continue straight up the path. 

You’ll meet another crossing further along the path when you are back on flat ground. Turn left here. Next, you will approach the first crossing you came to, turn right and continue back to Loftus Oval.

There are so many different variations of this walk you can do around this area, with various paths you can make the walk shorter or more challenging. 

We found this walk perfect for kids as there are plenty of trees for hiding spots, lots of twists and turns to run around, and lots of sticks, stones, and other things that little kids love.
